When We Feel the Pain of Others Author: Gouya Roshan
When We Feel the Pain of Others
My heart aches. My eyes are filled with tears, and I feel trapped in a narrow and dark world. Sometimes it feels as if hope for the eternal end of wars is nothing more than an illusion—a dream that people want to believe in, yet the reality of the world has shattered it again and again.
War and the killing of the innocent are not new phenomena. Human history is filled with stories in which power has prevailed over humanity and innocent people have become victims. From distant past to the present day, scenes of pain and blood have been repeated countless times; as if humanity has still not managed to pass beyond the dark shadows within itself.
Perhaps the bitterest truth is that we humans often do not truly feel suffering until it reaches the door of our own homes. The pain of others remains for us merely a piece of news, an image, or a statistic. We continue our daily lives and accept the world as it is.
Human beings are complex creatures; capable of the greatest kindness, yet also of the deepest cruelty. But selfishness and indifference are two dangerous forces that often silence our collective conscience. As long as tragedy has not struck us directly, many of us watch it only from a distance.
That is perhaps why whenever we truly feel another person’s suffering with our whole being, our hearts grow heavy and tears gather in our eyes. In that moment we realize that the pain of another human being is, in truth, the shared pain of us all.
If one day humanity could feel the suffering of others before it reaches itself, perhaps the world would become a little kinder. Perhaps on that day, hope for the end of war would no longer be an illusion.
Otherwise, the world will continue to witness tears that fall with difficulty, and hearts that awaken only with difficulty.
